He became famous for using his own invention - the electric tattoo machine. Charlie Wagner was hired as an apprentice to O'Reilly, and went to open a supply business when O'Reilly died in 1908. Lew Alberts a wallpaper designer, became a partner in Wagner. Wagner was responsible for changing the tattoo designs using his design skills.
After a redesign of the art of tattooing, an increase in popularity occurred. In previous years, members of the elite New York society turned away from the idea. In late 1960, however, the popularity of tattoos increased by almost the same levels as today.
